Telling a story in multiple points of visual without text requires making sure the viewer understands the story in full. In this poster series, the depiction is the folklore tale behind the jack o’ lantern. The tale is titled “Jack of the Lantern,” where a man is forced to walk the Earth forever after death with only a hot coal inside of a handmade lantern after conning the devil.
The composition is made with only three colors spread across three layers, being limited to a value of red or orange. With each color being a separate layer, any overlapping colors create a darker or lighter shade through the multiply tool.
Using the layer mask tool, each layer is then modified using hand created ink textures made from brushes and splatters scanned into a computer. This gives the three posters the appearance of a leather bound book at 11 x 17 inches.
